The Hacienda Barú National Wildlife Refuge plays an important role in the development of the southern Pacific region of Costa Rica. Its importance is not only because of its protection of the ecological balance and biodiversity but also because of its leadership in tourism, communal development, education, and the quality of life of the area. In order to assure that the area continues to develop in a positive healthy manner it is important that everyone in the zone help to protect the natural beauty which is the great attraction to the foreign tourists so important to the economy of the region.
Hacienda Barú doesn’t produce miracles, but it does create opportunities for the community by attracting a large number of ecotourists to the area. The community realizes this more each day and is working hard to protect and expand its natural treasures in order to assure a prosperous future.

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines the word “sustainable” as: “of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or seriously damaged.”
The word has been in use for a long time, at least since 1727 according to Merriam-Webster. In recent years, with increased interest in our environment and concern over the rate of depletion of our natural resources, the word has come into popular usage. Information about how to live sustainably is readily available, as are products for sustainable ways of doing things. Energy efficiency is of utmost importance followed by water efficiency, social responsibility, general environmental friendliness and others.
