From San José to Uvita (Collectivo)
There is a bus that comes all the way from San José to Hacienda Barú and stops every so often to let people on and off, but the ride is long and not very comfortable. This service is called “collectivo”. The buses leave from the TRACOPA bus terminal, and the bus line is called Delio Morales. You will have to buy a ticket to Uvita, but you can get off anywhere. There are two buses each day. Each bus stops briefly at Orotina and Quepos before arriving at Hacienda Barú. After the bus stops in Quepos, the ride to Hacienda Barú is about an hour. The bus will stop at the entrance to Hacienda Barú if you ask the driver to let you off there. However, don’t trust the driver to remember. We are about two kilometers past the the Hatillo Viejo River. Watch for our sign on the right and ring the buzzer to alert the driver. There is a gas station immediately after our entrance.

This service is called “directo” because it won’t stop to let people on the bus, although it will stop to let you off. For that reason it only takes three hours. It leaves from the TRACOPA bus terminal. When you buy your ticket be sure to specify that you want the coastal route. The cost of this bus is more because you have to buy your ticket to the final destination, and Hacienda Barú is only about halfway. There are three buses each day. Each bus usually (but not always) stops briefly right after Orotina, about 90 minutes before arriving at Hacienda Barú. The bus will stop at the entrance to Hacienda Barú but you have to ring the buzzer to let the driver know where to let you off. We are about two kilometers past the Hatillo Viejo River. Watch for our sign on the right and ring the buzzer to alert the driver. There is a gas station immediately after our entrance.

Please be vigilant with your belongings on all buses in Costa Rica. If you have large bags in the hold, keep a good eye on what goes on and off the buses when it makes stops. Unfortunately petty theft is common.
It is a good idea to have a good road map with you when traveling by public bus.
